About the event
This is a more advanced session is designed for those who have some experience with oils but who would like to dive deeper into the techniques and materials involved.
After a brief introductory discussion about people’s experience and subject interests, Sue will begin by looking at the different materials that can be used, including canvas and board. There will be a detailed look at how to make Gesso and the benefits of short/long base. There will be advice on selecting (and sourcing) brushes, paint brands, pigments mediums and solvents.
Sue will then explore in depth the ideas and techniques that can inform a painter’s approach. Understanding colour principles and characteristics; controlling thickness of paint, Recognising temperature, hue, saturation. Also the reology of oil paint, using a palette knife for impasto and painting directly or indirectly.
There will also be a demonstration showing Imprimatura then ragging, Ebauche. and how to use a medium to progress from thin to thick paint. And the session will conclude with guidance on glazing / varnishing a finished work.
Plenty of time will be allowed for questions and discussion.
Sue is a contemporary oil painter living in East Sussex who specialises in landscapes and seascapes. She has been painting for many years, and completed a diploma course which has given her a valuable understanding of past masters and their styles. Impressionists, such as Paul
Cezanne and Camille Pissarro, have to some degree, influenced Sue’s current work.
